About the Vertical Menu

Vertical navigation is typically best as an addition to a large site that is using horizontal navigation for their main navigation. It may also be used instead of horizontal if it better fits the site’s needs.

Example

The vertical navigation design as seen on the left side of this page did not pass the Folwell Governance Committee's approval. A new design has been developed and can be seen in the screenshot below.

The vertical menu is fully navigable with assistive software and uses ARIA markup.

As designed for the theme, the menu is fully responsive and meets the following accessibility requirements:

  • ample spacing for touch screen navigation
  • color contrast
  • tabbing and arrow navigation
Best practices

Best practices

  1. Use the vertical menu for secondary navigation.
  2. Avoid redundancy from the main site navigation.
  3. Place the menu where users are accustomed to finding navigation on the left-hand side of your page.
  4. Keep nested links limited to three levels.
